University of Utica clinches men’s track title

ROCHESTER — The University of Utica men’s track and field team has won its third Empire 8 outdoor conference championship.

The team won its first title since 2017 on Saturday in Rochester. The Pioneers were in second place after Day 1 and edged St. John Fisher by five points to take first place. Utica had a team total of 194 points. Host Nazareth placed third with 170 team points.

The Pioneers won eight individual/relay events in total during the two-day encounter.

Rome Free Academy graduates Justin Swavely and Billie Mays III contributed to the team’s title.

In javelin, Swavely finished first with a mark of 55.22 metres.

In the shot put, Mays was fourth (13.46 meters) while Swavely (13.39 meters) was fifth.

Hunter Logan, who is from Fort Plain and attended Herkimer County Community College, threw 15.98 yards to set a meet and setup record. The brand ranks ninth in Division III this year.

The Utica women’s team finished third as a team of the championships.

Remsen’s Jade Dening finished first in the 1,500m with a time of 4:57.90 and the 3,000m Steeplechase 11:46.14 for Utica.

Camden’s Mackenzie Mix finished first in the 400 meters (56.76), 100 meters (12.23) and 200 meters (26.08). Jane Fahy of Oriskany was first in the shot put with a mark of 12.99 metres.
