Jamshedpur, 23 September: South Eastern Railway’s rail services were badly affected for the fourth day in a row today due to unrest by the Kurmi community for ST status at Kustaur and Nimdih railway stations in Adra division, Khemasuli and Bhanjpur railway stations of Kharagpur division and Aunlajori station of Chakradharpur division.
Up to 20 mail/express and passenger trains were canceled today. Apart from that, more than 30 trains were short-terminated/short-originated, 25 trains were diverted and half a dozen trains were rescheduled.
According to a circular issued by South Eastern Railway, 12860 Howrah-Mumbai Gitanjali Express services have been restored as of today.
Today’s list of canceled trains included Tatanagar-Howrah-Steel Superfast Express, Howrah-Barbil-Howrah Janshatabdi Express, Howrah-Titlagarh-Kantabhanji Ispat Express, Asansol-Tatanagar-Express, Tatanagar-Danapur Express, Tatanagar – Kharagpur Passenger , Tatanagar- Asansol MEMU Passenger and Asansol- Bokaro Steel City Special, Chakradharpur – Gomoh Express, Hatia- Kharagpur Express, Dhanbad – Tatanagar Express and Ranchi- Kharagpur Express.
Senior South Eastern Railway officers were at the Dharna site to monitor the situation. Adequate rail forces -RPF and GRP- were deployed in all unrest sites to prevent any untoward incident.
The unrest from the Kurmi community has also weighed on traffic on the national highways linking Kolkata and Jamshedpur.
