The Gluas campaign is back on track – Connacht Tribune – Galway City Tribune:

Bradley Bytes – A sort of political chronicle by Dara Bradley

The rise of the purple party has receded. The prospect of a “quiet revolution” has faded.

The Social Democrats were ‘the next big thing’ in Galway West, but are they political ‘has-beens’ now?

Councilor Owen Hanley is the party’s first and only elected representative in Galway. It’s not an easy place for a young city councilor whose support structure, local and national, seems to have disappeared.

Hanley’s election in Galway City East was meant to herald a new dawn for the party. A first seat on the Council was a platform to build on. That’s not quite how it happened, however.

Sharon Nolan nearly took a seat in City Central in the 2019 local elections. Had that happened, perhaps things would have been different. But should’a would’a could’a.

As things stand, many of the party’s grassroots supporters, who campaigned in elections and referendums, have either very publicly turned their backs on the Soc Dems or quietly disappeared.

Mr Galway West Social Democrats Niall Ó Tuathail, who unsuccessfully contested the general election but refused to stand in locals, has been quiet of late.

It was the party that led the way in the campaign for the marriage equality referendum. A few years later, the Soc Dems hadn’t even taken part in this month’s Galway Pride Parade.

Yes, Owen Hanley was there as a member of the community, as were people who would identify as Soc Dem supporters.
