Rain and thunderstorms likely to hit Churchill Downs (May 6)

It looks like we could be in for a soggy start to the weekend for the Kentucky Derby, with wetter weather expected Friday in Louisville, Ky.

According to latest forecast from The Weather Channel at 11 a.m. ETLouisville – home of Churchill Downs – and the surrounding area will likely experience widespread scattered thunderstorms over the 11-race map, with an 80% chance of rain currently.

The good news – for now – is that track conditions remain fast on the dirt, with the course on solid turf, according to the latest surface information from Churchill Downs officials.

Early Friday morning, the National Weather Service released a gloomier forecast, with a 90% chance of precipitation. Further amounts of rain were expected following scattered overnight showers in the region to potentially bring another half to three-quarters of an inch of precipitation.

Rainfall on Kentucky Oaks Day, which kicks off two days of racing, has happened a little more often than not, according to NSW records. Of the 146 Kentucky Oaks Days, 77 (53%) experienced rain at some point during the day, by historical data.

That said, the only Friday races potentially affected by heavy rain would be the grass stakes events. However, they are highly unlikely to be grounded due to their scale and the six-figure purses involved.

Friday’s featured race is the $1.25 million Kentucky Oakswith 14 talented 3-year-old fillies ready to leave the starting grid for the Grade 1 race on the dirt road.

Publication time for the Oaks is scheduled for 5:51 p.m. ET, with race coverage from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. ET on USA Network. You can also watch the race via streaming on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app.

On Saturday, the 148th Kentucky Derby race, which will feature 20 of the best 3-year-old horses in the world, will take place on dirt at 1 1/4 miles.

Ethereal Road was scratched this morning from the Derby, as well as Rattle N Roll from the Also Eligible list. This meant that Rich Strike, who was the second horse on the AE list, got drawn into the field.

As for the Derby, the start time is 6:57 p.m. ET, with coverage of the race from 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC. Previous races from Churchill Downs will also air on USA Network from 12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. ET.

Our Action Network handicappers will be providing their detailed information, along with updates on track conditions and weather forecasts throughout the two spectacular race days, so stay tuned for more from our team.
