Rackspace Technology launches a technical career

SAN ANTONIO, March 10, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Rackspace Technology® (NASDAQ: RXT), a leading end-to-end multicloud technology solutions company, today announced a revitalized Technical Career Tracking (TCT) program to provide technical team members with a pathway to leadership positions. The program amplifies the voice of technical team members as thought leaders, bridging technologies and teams, to create a unique technical voice and advance top technical talent.

The TCT is a program designed to:

  • Attract, retain and develop top technical talent, providing individual contributors with a non-people management career path through Director, Senior Direct, VP and Senior VP levels.
  • Expose top technical rackers (Rackspace Technology employees) to a wider range of business issues, opportunities, and senior executives.
  • Provide a place for regular cross-functional discussion and problem solving between technical leads.

After entering the TCT program, a Racker remains integrated into their existing team, but with the recognition of TCT membership, it is expected that TCT Rackers will become increasingly aware of business goals and challenges. Rackspace Technology’s most important players, and that TCT Rackers take advantage of their role within their group. to serve the purposes (both technical and non-technical) of the company.

“The idea of recognizing top technical talent is not new and many companies use titles such as ‘Distinguished Engineer’ or ‘Fellow’ to designate key technical people, but Rackspace Technology sees a distinction between these titles and its TCT members, who are expected to be involved in business decisions,” said Travis Runty, vice president of technical support and global cloud services for Rackspace Technology. “It’s more than just a badge or award you receive in this program, the TCT program provides a clear advancement path for technical personnel. It helps employees avoid the mid-career plateau that can hinder advancement for technicians, and it helps Rackspace Technology avoid losing people experienced by attrition.

To be eligible for the TCT program, Technical Rackers must have followed the typical career path in their area of expertise. Candidates typically come from technical support, internal IT and systems management, or product engineering. Candidates are screened by their respective business units, then by a global TCT committee and after passing the screening process, they are recommended for acceptance into the program.

Within the TCT program, there are four grades: Principal, Senior Principal, Distinguished and Fellow. These levels are respectively equivalent to Director, Senior Director, Vice President and Senior Vice President. The TCT program gives high-level technical personnel the opportunity to advance to leadership positions within the company, without having to manage people or give up their technical work. TCT team members participate in strategic business decisions and are compensated at rates equivalent to those of senior executives.

The TCT program has been a huge boost to Rackspace Technology’s top technical talent and the program also benefits the company by increasing the accuracy of estimates, making wiser and better decisions, speeding up response time or time to market, and increasing the efficiency of products and services. For example, Rackspace Services for VMware Cloud™ was brought to market faster than any other product in the company’s history with the help of TCT members.
