GoM recommends using AI/ML to track early stage breakout

The GST Council after its 47e The meeting held in Chandigarh endorsed most of the GoM recommendations formed to report on IT reforms and decided to implement AI/ML to check fraud/evasion at an early stage.

A press release issued by the government said that “the GoM on IT Reforms, among others, recommended that the GSTN put in place the AI/ML based mechanism to check the backgrounds of applicants for registration and improve risk-based monitoring of their post-registration behavior that non-compliant taxpayers should be identified from an early age and appropriate action should be taken to minimize the risk to the treasury.

The recommendations of the GST Council have been presented in this press release containing the main elements of the decisions in a simple language for the information of all stakeholders. The same would be implemented through relevant circulars/notifications/legislative amendments which alone will have the force of law.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, while speaking to the press, informed the recommendation to keep the GoM on IT services permanently.
