First section of LIRR’s third lane expansion debuts for morning commutes

The historic unveiling is a milestone for the project which began in 2018.

It’s something that Peter Haynes, chair of the LIRR Commuter Campaign, says he’s happy to see over.

Haynes says the third track allows the LIRR to run more trains and recover from delays during peak hour trips.

Since the pandemic, ridership has declined, but commuter advocates say people will end up coming back to the office more and the benefits will be seen later.

However, the third trail, which is a nearly 10-mile stretch that begins in Floral Park and ends in Hicksville, has not been without controversy.

The second section of the track, which runs from Garden City to Carle Place, will open on August 29.

All the other portions of the new rail will be put into service over the next few months.

LIRR statement:

As we open the new third runway between Floral Park and Hicksville, the Floral Park and Bellerose runways have new numbers.

At Bellerose, the old track 1 is now known as track 2 and the old track 2 is now known as track 4.

At the floral park, track H1 is now known as track 2 and track H2 is now known as track 4. Tracks M3 and M1 are now known as tracks 3 and 1.

Please listen to announcements or check the TrainTime app for track assignments, as some trains will now depart from different tracks.
