Crews prepare to build a light rail bridge on the TriMet project

Written by Bill Wilson, editor

TriMet will make a number of closures in the month of September for its MAX system project.

TriMet’s ongoing efforts to rejuvenate and improve the MAX system in the Portland, Oregon area will continue into September and will require the closure of I-84 and a small section of the MAX Blue Line.

The closure of I-84 is necessary so crews can continue to build a new light rail bridge over the freeway.

I-84 will be closed in both directions near the I-205 interchange from 10 p.m. Friday, September 23 to 4 a.m. Monday, September 26. The 7 Halsey/99th Avenue East ramp will also be closed.

As TriMet’s A Better Red project continues to progress in the Gateway area, crews will install beams for a new MAX bridge near the junction of I-84 and I-205 during the weekend shutdown .

During the MAX Blue Line disruption on September 24-25, crews will revitalize the track and a crossing at Northeast 102nd Avenue and East Burnside Street.

Construction activities currently underway include:

  • Construction of a new walkway and breakout facility for MAX operators at the MAX Fair Complex/Hillsboro Airport station;
  • Construction of a new railroad crossing, Red Line station platform, multi-use pathway and two new bridges just north of the Gateway Transit Center; and
  • Phased construction along Air Cargo Road near Portland International Airport to reposition the roadway.
