Washington D.C.- Today’s LGBTQ Victory Fund Approved Candidate Becca Balint won the Democratic primary election for the At-Large Congressional District of Vermont. With this victory, she is now on track to become the first LGBTQ person and the first woman ever elected to Congress from Vermont. Vermont is the only state that has never elected a woman to Congress.
According to the LGBTQ Victory Institute Go out for America mapthe only national database of our LGBTQ elected officials, there currently exists just 11 on LGBTQ people serving in Congress. To achieve fair representation, we need to elect 21 more LGBTQ people to the United States House of Representatives and five more LGBTQ people to the United States Senate.
Mayor Annise Parker, President and CEO of the LGBTQ Victory Fund, issued the following statement regarding Balint’s victory:
“Tonight, voters made their voices heard loud and clear: They are excited about Becca and her compelling vision for Vermont and our country, a vision built on courage and kindness. For nearly a decade, Becca has worked tirelessly to enact meaningful legislation to increase justice and equity in her community. Now she is ready to do the same in Congress. With legislation pending in Congress to enshrine LGBTQ rights and abortion rights into federal law, the urgency of this election couldn’t be clearer. Our community and our allies cannot afford to wait – or sit on the sidelines – when the rights of millions of Americans are at stake. We are confident that Becca will continue to be a fierce pro-equality and pro- – choice for all Americans.
The Victory Fund has named Balint a Game Changer Candidate, a designation given to federal or state candidates in historic races, which comes with additional support and services from the LGBTQ Victory Fund to ensure they win the day. of the ballot.
