App State Track and Field to send four to NCAA East preliminary round

App State seniors Ryan Brown and Hassani Burris and juniors Taylor Smith and Jada Branch have qualified for the 2022 NCAA East preliminary round, which will be hosted by Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. , May 25-28 at Haugh Track & Field.

Smith will compete in the women’s long jump, scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, May 26. After the Sun Belt Championships, Smith moved up to No. 46 in the NCAA East Region rankings in the women’s long jump category with a personal best 6.11 m (20′ 0.5″). Her personal best also ties her to fifth place with Linda McKoy in the App State Book of Records. She placed second on the podium and earned second-team all-conference honors last weekend.

Brown qualified for the men’s 3,000 meter steeplechase. Brown ranked 35th in the region after posting the App State school record (8:51.28) on April 7. At the Sun Belt Championships, Brown placed second in the event with a time of 9:06.55, earning second-team all-conference accolades. .

Branch and Burris qualified for the women’s triple jump. In the regional rankings, Branch sits at No. 29 after posting a personal best 12.86m (42′ 2.25″) on April 7. Branch earned second-team all-conference recognition with her second-place finish in the women’s triple jump at the Sun Belt Championships, posting a leap of 12.78m (41′ 11.25″). Burris is 41st in the regional standings with a leap of 12.70m (41′ 8″), set on April 22. Burris took fifth place at the Sun Belt Women’s Triple Jump Championships with a mark of 12.19m (40′ 0″). The women’s triple jump is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 28.

The top 12 competitors from each individual event in the NCAA East Preliminary Round will advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 8-11.
