2023 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica first drive

The Lamborghini Huracán STO was a dark horse to our Performance Car of the Year Event last September. Most of the judges knew immediately that there was no way to win. It was just too harsh on the road and a bit too ridiculous to watch. But on the track (and a few select slices of smooth, wide-open street pavement), it was magical. A car with driver for those who know what they are doing. A car with no reservations about what it claims to be, a car that takes no prisoners. The most successful Lamborghini in years.

It’s the latest (and possibly the last) evolution of Lamborghini’s entry-level V-10-powered supercar, aiming to fill the void left by the STO by offering the same cutting-edge performance and feedback. the breath while looking much more like a normal car on the road. The Tecnica retains the STO’s drivetrain but eschews the racy clamshell bodywork in favor of more pedestrian metal. Gone is the large fender and engine bay scoop, replaced with a slightly reworked version of the panels you would find on the Huracan Evo. The biggest change is to the fascia, where the company’s new Y-shaped accent completes the area around the headlights. Even the best modern turbo engines can’t match the excitement you get as you shift through the gears as this engine revs up to its 9,000 rpm crescendo. It’s not just the sound either – the power delivery is so precise and linear you wonder why anyone would even consider the McLaren or Ferrari equivalent.

But the transmission is not the novelty of the Tecnica. Suspension, aero and steering tweaks mean this car handles differently on the track than the STO. It’s less sharp and easier to approach on the edge, but it doesn’t lose that inherent balance that made the STO so satisfying to ride fast. Lightning-fast fixed-ratio steering combined with the same Bridgestone stems as the STO delivers mountains of grip and confidence through quicker turns and corner exits. That adjustability on corner entry is still there too, thanks to four-wheel steering and torque vectoring, which brakes the inside wheel when you start to turn. When the back comes loose, you’ll know it long before you get in trouble.

All of these brake cooling improvements have paid off. Lamborghini had journalists pounding the car on the track all day, and the brakes worked as well in my last session as they did in my first. The pedal travel, as promised, also didn’t change much throughout the day. If you want to use the Tecnica as a track car, you certainly can.

Perhaps the most fun part of driving the Tecnica on the track is switching between the two most aggressive driving modes, Sport and Corsa. Sport actually allows more slip angle than Corsa, which limits lateral action with the mission of faster lap times. Both modes deliver endless fun, but changes to traction control, torque vectoring and pedal response mean they deliver that fun in different ways. The only things I missed from the STO were fixed-back bucket seats and four-point harnesses. Fortunately, they are available as an option on the Tecnica.

The real reveal happens on the road, however. Where the STO is a hanging mess on all but glass-smooth tarmac, the Tecnica shines, happy to soak up imperfections with its retuned adaptive dampers. It’s a smooth, ride-friendly car that lets you wail over it without fear of slamming a pothole and breaking a wheel. It’s an STO you can enjoy driving to the track, rather than worrying about having it towed there. For most people, where track days are a once or twice a year event, the Tecnica is the ideal Huracán for the job.

Lamborghini says it designed the Tecnica to be a road car first. To that end, it’s added a bunch of new tech to make the cabin a better place to hang out. There’s Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, of course, but also Amazon Alexa voice commands and over-the-air updates. On-board telemetry is standard, allowing you to track your laps and improve your line to find the time. The all-digital gauge cluster uses Lamborghini’s familiar fighter jet-like design, making it easy to read and fun to watch.

Because the Tecnica isn’t a bare metal hull on wheels with no soundproofing, it makes for an enjoyable cruiser. There’s real padding in the seats and enough support to keep you comfortable on long rides. Unlike the STO, where you hear every pebble hitting the inside of the wheel arch, you can spend time driving on a freeway, going to the shops, or zipping through traffic in peace without regretting every decision you make. until there.

The most hardcore and eccentric of Lamborghini’s clientele will opt for the STO, of course. But savvy buyers will choose the Tecnica. While it might not be as quick or accurate as its race-ready sibling, the Tecnica is a more playful and enjoyable thing.
